Metro starts construction on Ontario distribution facilities

Grocer's modernization plan is expected to cost $400 million with construction lasting through 2023

Metro has started construction on its semi-automated fresh distribution centre in Etobicoke, Ont., part of a larger expansion effort that will also include a new frozen foods facility on the same site.

The $400-million modernization plan will be completed in two phases so the existing centre can continue to operate throughout the build. Construction is expected to last through 2023. The company says the renovations will enable it to continue its growth and expansion in the province.

The distribution centre will also include administrative offices and is expected to total more than 700,000 square feet.

Metro launched its online delivery service in Toronto earlier this year with orders picked by staff members at two stores. It's available to approximately 1.9 million households. Metro's online grocery delivery service has been available in Quebec since 2016.
