Sobeys stores closing across Canada

Sobeys announced Thursday it will be closing about 50 underperforming stores.

The decision came after Sobeys conducted a review of all manufacturing facilities and locations, following its acquisition of Safeway Canada.

Marc Poulin noted in a conference call the closures affected 15 smaller locations, at 20,000-sq.-ft or less, and all Sobeys banners were taken into consideration.

A spokesperson from Sobeys Inc. noted the closures by region would include:

Atlantic Canada: 1 stores
Quebec: 2 stores
Ontario: 7 stores
Western Canada: 25 stores

Sobeys has yet to release the complete list of 50 stores that it intends to close across the country, but Canadian Grocer has compiled a list (below) of some of the stores on the chopping block based on industry sources and reports from newspapers across the country.
