Thrifty Foods gets a new general manager

Lorne MacLean takes over from Jim Dores next month
6/18/2015

Jim Dores, chief executive of Thrifty Foods, will retire July 10, a company spokesperson has told Canadian Grocer.

Lorne MacLean, a 35-year Sobeys veteran, will step into the role the next day.

MacLean was most recently senior VP of operations and optimization for Sobeys.

Dores, who realigned the Foodland banner for Sobeys in Ontario, joined Sobeys in 1999. He held several jobs at Canada's No. 2 grocery chain, including senior VP and general manager of the community banner and wholesale program in Ontario. He became president of Thrifty in 2011.

Although Dores's retirement is only now being revealed, his departure was in the works for over a year, a Thrifty Foods spokesperson said.

This latest move follows a reorganization in May of Sobeys' business in Western Canada. Sobeys' three division in that market–Sobeys West, Thrifty Foods and Safeway–were  combined under a new Calgary-based group called the Western Business Unit, headed by Jason Potter.

MacLean will report to Potter.

An earlier version of this article referred to Jim Dores as the current president of Thrifty Foods. His title was changed to general manager in 2013. MacLean will also hold the title of general manager.
