Courtney Burokas

Store Manager
Safeway
SMO, Lindenridge Safeway #4859, Sobeys West, Winnipeg

How did you get into the grocery/CPG business?

I started my career in grocery 13 years ago managing the Starbucks kiosk at my local Safeway. After a short time, I realized how much I enjoyed managing the business and leading people. In 2010, I decided to express interest in becoming a store manager. I quickly advanced through various roles, such as Person in Charge, and second and first assistant manager, and in 2014 I graduated from the Retail Leadership Development (RLD) Program. Throughout the years, I have relocated and worked at various locations in Manitoba and Ontario. By relocating I was able to gain the necessary knowledge and experience which allowed me to fast track my career.

What are you proudest about in terms of your work?

Being a young female in the industry, I am most proud of the personal growth and self-confidence that I have gained over the years. I have been managing and leading people since my early 20s, which forced me to grow up quickly. If I hadn’t chosen this career I’m not sure I would have developed into the confident woman that I am today.

What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced in your career?

Being a retail manager throughout a pandemic has been a challenge to say the least. With all of the hurdles we’ve had to cross over the last year, the Lindenridge team has come out stronger than ever thanks to their camaraderie, strength and resilience.

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve received is that no matter how big, make your goals and aspirations known. Say yes to opportunities that get you out of your comfort zone and don’t be afraid to put your hand up.

What has been a career highlight or one of your greatest achievements?

A career highlight has been being part of a team that achieves district leading fundraising results which go directly back to the communities that we serve. Helping others is one of the most rewarding parts of the job.

What do you like most about your job?

I enjoy motivating people and encouraging them to see their full potential. A big part of my job is to be a mentor to those looking to advance their career within the company. I have had so many great mentors who have helped me along the way and I wouldn’t have been able to accomplish my goals without their support. Now it’s my turn to pay it forward.
