What is your proudest career achievement?
When I was promoted to a managerial role and had a team reporting directly to me for the first time. Although overwhelming at the time, being responsible for team members truly taught me a lot about being a leader and how managing a team is a constant learning experience. I have been fortunate to have managed many great teams over the years and take pride in building, engaging and developing people to their fullest potential.
What keeps you passionate about your work?
The fast pace and constant growth and innovation. I have been with Longo’s for eight years, always working in the finance function and can honestly say that every year has been so different and so fulfilling. I have been privileged to have been involved in many initiatives and projects over the years, supporting business growth and developing so much as a finance leader and professional throughout this time.
How did you get into the grocery business?
After university, I started the journey towards achieving my CA designation. I started with E&Y, but I knew that would be short term as I wanted to be part of a finance team that was engrained in and supported business operations. I left E&Y after gaining valuable technical experience and worked for Mars Canada. There, I learned so much about the CPG industry and when an opportunity at Longo’s arose, the thought of learning the “other side” of the grocery retail world was intriguing.
What is the best career advice you've received?
Trust your instinct. If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t. Never hesitate to speak up or challenge something. Sharing opinions, challenging perspectives and stimulating different points of view are often what gets us to the best results.
What do you like to do for fun?
I enjoy spending time with family and friends, being outdoors and staying active. I have two boys who keep us busy with sports, social events and family vacations. In the summer, we can be found entertaining at our pool, going for weekend cottage getaways with friends, and golfing. In the winter, although mostly in hockey rinks, we do enjoy alpine skiing and clearing our pond for some skating and pond hockey. I enjoy gardening, and I try to make time for exercise.
