Lyn Morgan

Senior Director, Human Resources
UNFI Canada

What's the biggest challenge you've faced in your career?

One of the most challenging times of my career was balancing a young family of three children, caring for an aging parent, building a career and volunteering in three non-profit organizations, which included parent council at my children’s school, president of a skating club with Skate Canada, and president of the West Toronto HRPA [Human Resources Professionals Association].

What is your best quality?

The qualities that have served me well both personally and professionally have been patience and perseverance.

What is the best advice you've received?

Do something nice for someone every day, appreciate what you have and when you think you’ve given it your all, dig down and give a bit more. I’ve tried to consider everyday what I can do for someone to make the world a kinder, nicer place. It could be opening the door or letting someone into a lane while driving.

What are your greatest achievements/career highlight/s?

Together with my spouse raising a daughter and two sons into fun and successful adults. This year marks my 40 years working in human resources! It’s hard to believe I’m at the tail end of my working career when it feels like it was just yesterday when I started working.  I’ve been very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work in several different industries along the way.

What keeps you motivated at work?

Making a difference in people’s lives—the joy of offering employment to individuals so they can provide for their families and seeing them grow and progress in their chosen profession.  There is nothing as rewarding than seeing people flourish in their careers.

What do you like most about your job?

No two days are alike. The variety and scope that working in human resources brings is what I like the most about working in this field.  Finding win-win solutions that better the organization and its people has always been the challenge to find creative solutions that benefit both parties. This is what gives me a lot of personal satisfaction.

What do you like to do when you're not working?

I love spending time with family and friends, personal travel, cooking and gardening. Volunteering and giving back to the community have been lifelong passions of mine. Lately, lots of knitting and crocheting of baby blankets for new arrivals!
