Melanie Barlow
Senior Director Industry Relations
GS1 Canada
How did you get your start in the grocery/CPG business?
My experience started early on the family farm. With great respect for the men and women who work to feed our nation, I graduated with a degree in agriculture and entered the workforce as an account manager for our local co-operative. My children happily grew up riding their tricycles in the barn alleyway, learning meaningful life lessons. As my children evolved, so did I. GS1 Canada was a perfect fit with the community management acumen that I knew so well, but also brought forward a new flavour adding in the grocery/CPG side of the business.
What are some career highlights/greatest achievements?
I have had the privilege of mentoring people early on in my career. My first supervisor role was when I was 17 and a summer student—I managed a 10-man night crew driving 10-wheeler trucks and combines. I had to think outside of the box to earn their respect as they all were at least twice my age. Being the youngest on teams, I learned quickly to value the support and insight that my seasoned colleagues provided.
Since I was lucky enough to have great guides during my career, I consider my greatest career achievement to be when individuals I am mentoring grow and flourish. It is with the same pride that I enjoy watching the accounts that I foster evolve and grow within the grocery/CPG space. I have had the opportunity through my retailer and broker/distributor relationships to play a direct role with hundreds of business entrepreneurs of all sizes, guiding them through the necessary procedures to make sure their products can make it to shelf.
What do you like best about your current role?
I love setting goals, making a meaningful difference and seeing the results, whether that is with my accounts, my colleagues or my team. I am highly competitive with myself and love a good challenge. Each day brings something new to the table and allows me to learn, stretch and grow.
How do you stay motivated at work?
I know everyone says this, but I truly love what I do. My work can make a difference. I have had the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people in this tight-knit grocery community and they are outspoken on the importance of having a GS1 ally.
What is your superpower?
My team is my superpower! They all have unique skill sets, which allow me to learn from them and shine when it’s my powerhouse skill that is needed. My powerhouse skill, I think, lies in my ability to build lasting relationships, and provide valuable assistance to others within the grocery industry. Walking through a conference trade show, it’s incredibly rewarding to be recognized by numerous people whose lives or businesses I’ve positively impacted over the years, making every encounter a testament to the depth of my connections and the impact of my contributions.
How do you spend your time outside of work?
Once again, back to my family roots and being on the farm. My daughter shares my love of horses, so we spend a lot of time at the stables. I also love spending time with my boys and their families. I am French Canadian, so it’s all about enjoying the people you love, accompanied with great food and wine.
Anything else to add?
I am humbled and touched to be recognized with this award. This business can be challenging, and I feel privileged to have wonderful mentors at GS1. I applaud all my “sisters” in the industry, and I look forward to celebrating them in turn. To the next rising stars, know that the road isn’t without challenges, believe and stay true to yourselves. Don’t be afraid to ask for guidance when needed and most importantly make sure you are having fun.
