Melissa Chatten

Director of Retail Sales
Piller’s Fine Foods

You started your career as a new graduate in the marketing department at Piller's. Tell us about those early days and how you've grown as a leader.

I remember being wide-eyed, eager and driven to prove myself. I was focused on doing everything right and making an impact quickly. I was fortunate to have many experienced mentors to learn from. Looking back, those years were foundational. I learned to listen closely, adapt fast and build trust across teams. As I grew into more senior roles, I realized leadership isn’t about having all the answers — it’s about asking the right questions and creating space for others to shine.

Proudest career moment?

One of them was making the transition from marketing into sales leadership, specifically, being named director of sales [in late 2024]. Not just because of the title, but because of what it represented: trust, growth and the ability to bring two worlds together. Having started in marketing, I brought a deep understanding of brand and customer insights, and I used that to bridge gaps between departments and create more cohesive strategies. Leading a team through change, aligning them around a shared vision and seeing real results come from that collaboration has been incredibly fulfilling.

Best advice you've received?

“To find strength in vulnerability.” Earlier in my career, I equated leadership with certainty. But, I’ve come to learn that being open about challenges, asking for input and admitting when I don’t know something has helped me build deeper, more authentic connections with my team. That shift has not only made me a stronger leader, but also a more human one.

What do you like most about your job?

The people. I've been very fortunate to have opportunities to learn and grow within an organization filled with dedicated individuals. I’ve spent my entire career with Piller’s and it’s because of the people. Our team is exceptional, and their passion makes even challenging days rewarding as we come together to achieve our goals.

How do you bring out the best in team members?

By empowering them with trust and autonomy and boosting their confidence and performance. I prioritize open and honest communication to ensure everyone feels valued and heard. I foster a collaborative environment where people feel safe to contribute, and I recognize and celebrate their efforts—because appreciation and connection are key to keeping a team motivated and engaged.

What is a fun fact about you?

I have a passion for travel and have visited 20 countries so far. Even with three small children (ages six, four and one), we continue our adventures together. Last summer, we took a memorable family trip to the United Kingdom and France. We are already looking forward to our next adventure!
