2026 Star Women in Grocery Award Winner Nicole LaRush (Q&A)
Nicole LaRush
Senior scientist, R&D
The Campbell Company
How did you get your start in the CPG business?
I discovered the CPG industry during my co‑op experience at the University of Guelph while working in R&D at Maple Leaf Foods. I was drawn to the blend of science, cooking and hands‑on creativity, as well as the satisfaction of seeing products come to market that people enjoy. After completing my bachelor of science in biochemistry, I joined Campbell’s meals and beverages division. There, I built a strong foundation in product development and gained confidence in my skills. I further strengthened those capabilities in a fast‑paced innovation environment at Giraffe Foods before returning to Campbell’s in the snacking division. At Campbell’s, my leadership continues to grow through bringing both Canadian ground‑up innovations and U.S. platforms to market.
You’ve identified and converted emerging trends into innovation opportunities. How do you know when something is a passing fad versus a commercial opportunity?
I tend to look at trends through both a consumer and a practicality lens. For me, a real opportunity shows up consistently in consumer behaviour, not just as a moment of short‑term excitement. I pay close attention to whether it keeps appearing across consumer insights and on shelves, then consider whether the trend addresses a meaningful need or gap in the business portfolio. From there, I work closely with my brand partners to determine whether the idea can be executed in a way that delivers lasting value. That includes assessing technical feasibility, scalability, brand fit and our ability to bring it to market while meeting brand standards. When a trend can be translated into a product that truly resonates with consumers, strengthens the portfolio and holds up to commercial and operational realities, that’s when it moves beyond a passing fad and becomes a genuine innovation opportunity.
Of all the products that made it to the shelf, is there one that felt like a bold bet that you were especially proud to see succeed? Why was this a meaningful “win?”
One of the boldest and most meaningful wins for me was the launch of Loaded Ketchup and Creamy All Dressed Kettle Brand Potato Chips. These were the first Canadian‑led, ground‑up Kettle Brand innovations developed since Campbell’s acquisition of Snyder’s‑Lance, which raised the bar significantly. This launch was especially meaningful because it intentionally closed a portfolio gap by bringing two of Canada’s top five flavours to the Kettle Brand lineup, while staying true to the brand’s Non‑GMO Project Verified standards. Seeing these products succeed on shelf with bold flavour delivery reinforced the value of locally led innovation and our ability to deliver what Canadian consumers truly want.
What keeps you motivated at work?
What keeps me motivated is the evolving and dynamic nature of the CPG industry. There is always a new challenge to tackle and something new to learn, all while carrying the responsibility of nourishing consumers and responding to their changing preferences. That motivation is further strengthened by working alongside a highly collaborative team and supportive leaders who foster trust, partnership and genuine connection.
What habits or mindsets have helped you stay resilient?
One mindset that has helped me stay resilient is inspired by a quote from Babe Ruth: “Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game.” In innovation‑driven roles where outcomes are not guaranteed, I focus on the potential opportunities by showing up with curiosity and taking thoughtful risks rather than letting fear of failure hold me back. I view setbacks as chances to learn and adapt, staying flexible as priorities and strategies shift so I can adjust course and keep moving forward. Staying curious and asking the right questions helps me build understanding, challenge assumptions and uncover better paths forward during times of change.
What is the best career advice you have received?
The best career advice I’ve received is to control the controllables. While we can’t control every aspect of a situation, we can control our perspective and how we choose to respond. This mindset has helped me stay grounded and move forward with confidence, even when the path forward is unclear.
What is a fun fact about you?
I grew up on a family farm within the standardbred horse‑racing community, which shaped my values around family, loyalty and hard work. I love spending time with my family and friends or going outdoors to explore and hike with my dog, Duke.
