Asda first to introduce rapid-scan checkout

The retailer's new checkout technology features a laser that can identify bar codes from every angle
7/5/2013

Asda is the first retailer in the U.K. to use a rapid-scan checkout that features a 360-degree laser scanning technology, cameras and a moving conveyor belt.

The checkout technology is currently being used in only one store, and will decide depending on customer feedback if the system will be rolled out to all its stores. Asda developed the technology with IT firm Wincor Nixdorf and is designed to handle larger baskets.

Shoppers only need to unload their items onto the conveyor belt, then groceries are scanned through to bagging.

Asda said the new checkout is three times faster than traditional ones–scanning 100 items per minute– thanks to the 360-degree laser technology capable of identifying bar codes from every angle.
