Revolutionary retail technology ages gracefully in era of scanning devices

The technology that revolutionized retail has come along way since its start on the package of Wrigley’s Juicy Fruit gum at a grocery store in Ohio. The bar code is celebrating its 40th anniversary this week. While bar codes are standard practice now, many grocery retailers were skeptical to adopt the new technology. Most Canadian retailers weren’t equip with bar code scanners until the early 1990s. The bar code has come a long way since first being used in grocery stores. While they were first only used as a means to double-check price of a product, we now see more complex versions that contain much more data. Nutritional information, health benefits and food origins are all things the average shopper can now look up with a simple scan of their smartphone. Read the full story here
