British grocer Sainsbury's to launch premium cosmetics line

Ever since the earliest days of A&P in the 1860s, grocery stores have stocked their shelves with private label products.

Most of these items have been foods, or at least grocery staples.

But now the U.K. supermarket chain Sainsbury’s is launching a premium line of private-label cosmetics.

The line, sold under the name Boutique, includes nail polishes, eye shadows, lipsticks and accessories. It arrives in stores this September.

Beauty and personal care are among the few categories that retailers have not aimed their private-label guns at. Perhaps this will be the opening salvo.
