Canadian news could soon disappear from Google when Bill C-18, otherwise known as the Online News Act, comes into effect at the end of the year.

Here’s what you need to know about the legislation and how you can stay connected with Canadian Grocer.

What is Bill C-18?

The Liberal government passed Bill C-18 in June. It requires tech companies to compensate news organizations for sharing links to their content.

In response, Google and Meta (formerly Facebook) say the only way they can reasonably comply with the legislation is by blocking links from Canadian news websites.

Meta, which also owns Instagram, has already removed news links from its platforms. Google says it will remove news links when the law comes into effect.

“We unfortunately will have to remove links to Canadian news from our Search, News and Discover products in Canada,” Google said in a statement in June. “C-18 will also make it untenable for us to continue offering our Google News Showcase product in Canada.”

For its part, Meta said in a statement: “As we have repeatedly shared, the Online News Act is fundamentally flawed legislation that ignores the realities of how our platforms work, the preferences of the people who use them, and the value we provide news publishers.”
