Canada Safeway signs on to promote local food

4/26/2012

A major grocery chain has signed on to the ``Buy Manitoba'' program.

Canada Safeway stores in the province will soon put up new signs and shelf markers to promote food that is produced or processed within Manitoba.

The government says it hopes other grocery chains will join the program, which was launched in 2010 at a government cost of $742,000.

To qualify as a Manitoba food, at least 85 per cent of the main ingredients have to come from the province.

To qualify as a food processed in Manitoba, all processing and packaging must be done within the province.
