Car racing technology comes to the supermarket

U.K. grocer Sainsbury's has teamed up with Williams Advanced Engineering—a big name in Formula One racing—to give its fridges what it describes as a "turbo boost" to make them more energy efficient.


Sainsbury's refrigeration systems are being fitted with a new aerodynamic device developed by Williams Advanced Engineering and Aerofoil Energy. "Aerofoils" is the same technology that helps enhance the performance of F1 racing cars. In the grocery store they’re being used to prevent cold air from spilling out of the front of refrigeration cabinets and instead holding in the cold air to lessen energy consumption in stores.

The retailer, the U.K.’s second-largest grocery chain, has committed to cutting its carbon emissions 30% by 2020 and this initiative is expected to play a part in achieving that goal.
