Coppa’s Fresh Market is coming to downtown Toronto.

The family-owned and operated grocery retailer, which currently has four stores in the Greater Toronto Area, said its new location at One York Street would open in early 2018.

The 20,000-sq.-ft. supermarket will be part of a large-scale mixed-use office, residential and retail complex at York and Harbour Streets in the rapidly expanding south core district. The neighbourhood is also home to Air Canada Centre, Ripley’s Aquarium and the Rogers Centre, and is connected to the PATH underground network.

is the most exciting new area in Toronto and Coppa’s wanted to be a part of it,” said John Louie Coppa, president of Coppa’s Fresh Market, in an email to Canadian Grocer. “The lower precinct is on a massive growth track and we feel our brand would fit very well with the people who live, work and play in the area.”

Coppa’s Fresh Market offers a wide variety of foods from local suppliers and international brands. The new location will feature a wine bar and full-service restaurant, in addition to the grocer’s regular departments such as “Fresh Catch,” “Butcher’s Cuts” and “European Deli.”

“What makes Coppa’s unique is our appreciation of our customers’ busy lifestyle,” said Coppa. “Everywhere you turn in this new store, we will be offering foods that make eating easier, not more complicated, from ready-to-eat meals to pre-cut vegetables.”

Coppa's will be located on the second floor of the four-storey retail podium in the One York/Harbour Plaza complex. Developed by Menkes Developments, the complex also includes a 35-storey office tower, two 70- and 66-storey condominiums and an underground parking garage. Other anchor retailers that were announced are Winners and Mercatino, a market-style restaurant.
