Farm Boy is taking over a FreshCo store in Newmarket, Ont.
Once renovated, the store will include hallmarks associated with Farm Boy, most notably a large offering of prepared foods, gourmet pizzas and fresh salads.
"We’re excited to bring our fresh, wholesome foods and friendly service to the Newmarket community," said Jeff York, Farm Boy co-CEO, in a press release. “The store location is a great fit in the community and will give customers the opportunity to visit and explore everything Farm Boy has to offer.

The FreshCo store will close Oct. 26 for renovations and is expected to reopen as Farm Boy in summer 2020.
The Empire-owned chains continue to undergo changes--Farm Boy is in the midst of a Southern Ontario expansion, while FreshCo secures a foothold out West.

Farm Boy was in expansion mode before it was purchased by Empire in September 2018. When details of the acquisition were announced, York told Canadian Grocer that Empire would help fuel Farm Boy’s growth and could provide access to better locations. With the big three–Loblaw, Sobeys and Metro–getting first chance at premium sites, Farm Boy was left with “the crumbs,” York said at the time.
