Metro's discount banner Food Basics opened a new store in Oakville, Ont. Thursday morning—its 144th location overall and its third in the lake-side town, which is 40-kilometres southwest of Toronto.
Customers snaked around the parking lot well before the official ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:30 a.m.—some arrived by car, while others walked from nearby housing developments—to shop the 32,000-sq.-ft.-space.
Located on the Oakville-Burlington border within a newly constructed retail development at the corner of Rebecca Street and Burloak Drive, the new store has all the hallmarks of a Food Basics: locally sourced products, fresh meat and produce, self-checkout lanes and a robust private-label offering.
“We’re very happy to be growing right here in Oakville and providing our bordering neighbours in Burlington, a great new place to shop with always great prices, said John Manax, vice-president of operations at Food Basics. “Our purpose as a retailer is to nourish the health and wellness of the communities we serve.”
The new Oakville store is only blocks away from an existing Food Basics in Burlington, which the company will keep in operation—a fact Oakville Mayor Rob Burton acknowledged in his remarks to the crowd.
“I would like to thank Food Basics for believing in the future of Oakville and I would also like to appreciate the way they’re keeping another store in place for us, which is very important to that community,” said Mayor Burton. “This truly is a company that is involved in the community where it locates and provides an important piece of livability, which is affordability.”
Food Basics also made a $5,000-donation to local charity Kerr Street Ministries, which provides care and support for vulnerable and at-risk children, families and individuals in the community.
