Four 7-Eleven locations in Winnipeg permanently close: reports

Winnipeggers woke up to the news that four 7-Eleven locations have shut down that at report from CTV News Winnipeg says was prompted over growing concerns over theft at the locations.

CTV News Winnipeg says the stores located at 815 Ellice Ave., 665 McPhillips St., 1007 McPhillips St., and 1103 Pembina Highway showed signs of being closed. Some stores had announcements on them telling of their closure and those looking inside saw empty shelves at the four stores.

In August, two city councillors were reported to have sat down with officials from 7-Eleven Canada over issues around crime and store staff safety that were prompting talk by the conveniences store operator’s parent company to contemplate closing some 10 stores in the city.

According to a CBC News report on the meeting, Mynarski Coun. Ross Eadie and Point Douglas Coun. Vivian Santos spoke with company officials about the concerns the councillors had over the rumours of the closing of the 10 stores.

The 10 7-Eleven stores said to be under threat of closure were located at: 119 Salter St., 665 McPhillips St., 120 Keewatin St., 891 Arlington St., 1485 Inkster Blvd., 815 Ellice Ave., 456 Talbot Ave., 1184 Portage Ave., 1895 Wellington Ave., and 909 Lorette Ave.

Councilor Eadie said the closings were a loss for the communities where the stores were located as people in those communities purchased many necessary goods such as milk, eggs, and bread from them.
