Hilary Weston tops Ireland's wealthiest list

5/1/2012

Hilary Weston, wife of billionaire Galen Weston, owners of Loblaw topped Ireland's richest list for the fourth consecutive year.

According to the Sunday Times Rich List, Weston and family beat out rockers U2, and the Earl of Iveagh and the Guinness Family with a fortune of $9 billion.

They ranked 10th overall in all of the UK, having jumped 40 places up the rich list since 2010, says the Toronto Star.

Along with Loblaw, the Weston family businesses include Weston Bakeries and high-end retailer Holt Renfrew. Abroad, they own department stores Brown Thomas in Dublin and Selfridges in London, and have a stake in Associated British Foods.

All Irish-born people are eligible to make the rich list, and Hilary Weston was the eldest daughter of an appliance salesman who grew up in Dun Laoghaire.

The Star reports that Forbes puts the Westons at 121st richest, while in Canada, they’re second behind the top-ranked Thomson's.
