Ian Portsmouth named publisher and editor-in-chief of Canadian Grocer
Canadian Grocer is pleased to announce Ian Portsmouth as its new publisher and editor-in-chief.
Portsmouth is an experienced media executive and business journalist with a track record of leading editorial brands and diversified publishing businesses. His writing and editing have been recognized for excellence by the National Magazine Awards Foundation, Canadian Business Press and the Canadian Society of Magazine Editors. As a publisher, he has led print and digital media, events, awards programs and other revenue-generating initiatives serving business and consumer audiences.
Portsmouth spent much of his career at Rogers Publishing Ltd., where he held senior editorial and business roles. He served for more than a decade as editor-in-chief of PROFIT, then Canada’s most-read publication for entrepreneurs and growth-oriented businesses. During his tenure, he expanded the brand beyond print and web content through special digital initiatives, such as the BMO Business Coach Podcast, and integrated awards programs, such as the W100: Canada’s Top Women Entrepeneurs. He later became publisher and editor-in-chief of PROFIT, then publisher of PROFIT, Canadian Business and MoneySense.
As managing director of the Insurance Media Group at Newcom Media Inc., Portsmouth led a diversified media business serving Canada’s property and casualty insurance industry, with operations in print and online publishing, directories, newswires and events. Among his initiatives was the repositioning and editorial relaunch of Canadian Underwriter, which solidified the publication’s market leadership following several years of decline.
Portsmouth later served as chief content officer of Engineering.com, where he led a team of editors, writers and video producers focused on the technical needs of a global engineering audience.
