AWARDS

The Canadian Federation of Independent Grocers announced the recipient of the 2016 Spirit of Independent Ward—Michael McCain, president and CEO of Maple Leaf Foods. He will  be recognized at the Canadian Independent Grocer of the Year awards gala on Tuesday, October 18 at Grocery Innovations Canada 2016 (GIC).

Darryl Rowe, President of Weston Bakeries, was the recipient of CFIG’s Life Member Award in the Industry Builder category. Cori Bonina of Stong’s in Vancouver B.C., was 2016 recipient of CFIG’s prestigious Life Member Award in the Independent Grocer category.

Super Farms Potato Ltd of Saint-André was named the 2015/2016 McCain Champion Potato Grower for Grand Falls during the 42nd annual McCain Growers’ Banquet held August 23 at Centre E.& P. Sénéchal.

STORE OPENINGS

After a store reno, Fresh St. Market in Surrey, B.C. reopened this week. The 23,000 sq.-ft.-store was previously used by IGA then it closed last February. This location is larger than its Fleetwood store.

COMMUNITY

Grocery chain Colemans announced a $30,000 donation to schools across Newfoundland for kids eat healthy program in partnership with Kraft, Campbell's, Kellogg's, Lipton Unilever, ConAgra Foods, Smucker's Coca Cola and Purity.
