Japanese physiologist builds high-tech indoor farm
Produces over 10,000 heads of lettuce each day with LED technology
A physiologist in Japan is distributing 10,000 lettuce heads a day using only LED lighting. Plant physiologist Shigeharu Simamaru wanted to explore ways to help keep up with food demand, without the risk os of drought, crop disease and natural disasters. He's created an indoor farm that spans nearly half the size of a football pitch in an old factory, working with Genereral Electrics to the LED light fixtures. The lights allow the experts to control the temperature, humidity and irrigation in the farm, creating ideal conditions for the lettuce to grow two-and-a-half times faster. Read the full story here.
