Jean-Michel Coutu has been named president of The Jean Coutu Group, Metro’s Quebec-based pharmacy division.

He takes over the post from Alain Champagne, who will be leaving the business in September to become president and chief executive officer of a privately held Quebec company operating in a different sector.

Metro stated the executives will work closely together until Champagne's exit to ensure a smooth transition.

Champagne joined Metro in 2019 and helped lead the merger of the Jean Coutu Group and Metro.

“He leaves our pharmacy division, our banners and our pharmacist owners well positioned for the future. We thank him for his contributions and leadership and wish him well in his new position,” Metro said in a press release.

A pharmacist and business executive that has worked in both the United States and Canada, Coutu has been with the food retailer since 2009.

“He has deep knowledge of the industry, our operations and our opportunities. Mr. Coutu will continue to execute our strategy and business plans which have allowed Metro to remain the leader in pharmacy in Québec through our Jean Coutu and Brunet banners while supporting the success of the pharmacists owners affiliated to our banners,” the company stated.
