Kruger Inc. is spending $6.5 million to diversify production at its Wayagamack Mill in Trois-Rivières, Que.

The “innovation project” will support the production of label paper grades.

Quebec is providing $2.5 million in funding to Kruger under the Programme Innovation Bois of the ministère des Ressources naturelles et des Forêts.

In 2017, the Wayagamack Mill started to shift to specialty paper, including backing paper, developing expertise in the growing field.

The facility currently employs 285 people.

"We would like to acknowledge the Government of Quebec's support for innovation projects that help local companies modernize and remain competitive. As a proud Quebec company, our Kruger Wayagamack Mill will be able to position itself as a provincial leader and a major player in North America steadily growing label paper market," Justin Paillé, SVP, manufacturing, Kruger Pulp & Paper Division, said in a statement.

Nearly $1 billion has been invested in the mill since its acquisition in 2001.
