Metro picks Quebec supplier to offer local lettuce year round

The grocery chain finds an innovative Quebec greenhouse grower to offer local lettuce 12 months of the year

Thanks to an innovative local greenhouse produce supplier, Metro will now be able to offer local, organic lettuce year round.

The grocery chain will sell Vôg greenhouse grown organic lettuce exclusively at Metro conventional stores in Quebec.

The lettuce is produced by Les Serres Lefort in Sainte-Clotilde-de-Châteauguay, located 60 km south of Montreal and comes in a peat block. This unique packaging allows part of the root system to be maintained, resulting in shelf life to be doubled.

There will be four varieties on offer including curly-leaf, red baby romaine, Boston and red oak leaf. The products will be easily identifiable in stores with the Vôg organic labelling and the Aliments du Québec organic label.

Earlier, the grocery chain introduced Vôg's sweet peppers. This latest agreement is part of Metro's local purchasing policy announced last May.

"We are constantly trying to maximize the accessibility and the promotion of local products," said Bernadette Hamel, Metro’s vice-president of national procurement for produce.
