12/22/2014

Award-winning independent grocer Michael Angelo’s re-opened the doors to its flagship location last Friday.

The 15,000-sq.-ft. renovation took one year to complete, with more than half now dedicated to HMR. The Pugliese family, owners and operators of Michael-Angelo’s for over three decades, worked with integrated retail experts Watt International on the redesign.

The grand opening was themed “Viva Italia” and included a series of in-store events that placed emphasis on regional Italian cuisine and flavours.

“When we see someone walking down the street with our shopping bag, it means a lot to us, because we know we’re doing a good job,” said Michael Pugliese, president and CEO. “We worked with a leader in retail design to achieve a personalized shopping experience and we’re so excited to have the community discover it.”

Features in the new store include a fresh mozzarella station, and gelato and juice bars. The store also features an “A-la-minute meals” station which includes an omelet station, pasta bar, and will be an area to showcase new product offerings, samplings, and private label tastings.

Owner Michael Pugliese has said there are plans to renovate the other two Michael Angelo locations to the Markham store prototype.
