7-Eleven is giving Canadians the chance to pay whatever they like for a Slurpee on Friday–and all for a good cause.
The first-ever “Slurpee name your price day” promotion is happening at all 491 of the convenience chain’s Canadian stores from B.C. to Ontario.
All of the money customers pay for Slurpees on Friday will go to Food Banks of Canada, which supports local food banks across the country.
Raj Kapoor, vice-president and general manager of 7-Eleven Canada, said the idea behind the promotion is to “step back and let our customers decide what kind of impact they have.”
As part of the promotion 7-Eleven is highlighting the fact that one in five Canadians have skipped a meal because they could not afford food or so that their children could eat.
And 36% have bought less expensive food in the past year because of financial struggles.
7-Eleven officials said customers who pay one dollar for a Slurpee would be giving breakfast for a week to an individual in need, while a $5 donation would provide dinners for one person for a month.
A large Slurpee normally costs $1.99.
The event is being promoted through social media, point of sale, the 7-eleven mobile app and at Slurpee.ca.
The company is also encouraging Canadians who buy a Slurpee Friday to post a picture of themselves using the hashtag #Nameyourprice or by tweeting how much they paid for a Slurpee at @7ElevenCanada.
This isn’t the first time 7-Eleven has used its iconic Slurpee drink to aid a charity.
In May, 7-Eleven held “So long to winter”, a one-day promo in which people could get a free Slurpee in exchange for donating their used winter clothing to the Salvation Army Thrift Store.
