Sobeys Inc. is donating $1 million to Special Olympics Canada.

The grocery company made the tough decision to cancel its in-store fundraising campaign scheduled for June because of COVID-19, said Sandra Sanderson, vice-president of marketing, Sobeys Inc., in a press release.

"Instead, we’ve made a corporate donation to ensure Special Olympics’ grassroots, community-based sports programs across Canada are not impacted in such a challenging year," she said.

The donation will support 49,600 Special Olympics athletes and the 22,000 volunteers that deliver more than 6,175 programs in 365 communities across Canada, according to a press release.

The grocery company, whose banners include Sobeys, Safeway, IGA, Foodland, FreshCo and Thrifty Foods, has been a national partner of Special Olympics Canada since 2016.
