The North West Company announced today it has entered into a binding purchase and sales agreement with Sobeys to buy a Price Chopper store in Winnipeg.
The sale is part of Sobeys' October, 2013 Consent Agreement with the Competition Bureau, which required the retailer to sell 23 stores in connection with its purchase of Canada Safeway.
North West's purchase is subject to the Competition Bureau's approval.

In early February, Sobeys signed deals to sell 30 stores in Western Canada —Overwaitea Food Group agreed to buy 15 locations, including 5 Safeways and 2 Thrifty Food stores not on the Competition Bureau's designated list, while Federated Co-operatives Ltd. agreed to buy 14 stores. At the time, the buyer of the the remaining Price Chopper location in Winnipeg was left unidentified.
"We are very excited about the addition of the Price Chopper location to our retail presence in the Winnipeg market," said Dan McConnell, vice-president development and corporate affairs for North West, in a press release.

With this additional location, North West will now operate ten stores in Winnipeg, employing a total of 1,227. The Price Chopper will continue to operate under the same name once the deal is closed.
