Sobeys upgrading several western DCs

Sobeys is upgrading several western facilities including the centre in Winnipeg in preparation for when it starts supplying food for Target stores opening in Canada in 2013.

Included in its western expansion is the Winnipeg distribution centre that will be adding some 121,000 square feet.

The facility is currently 200,000 square feet and the new distribution space will include bigger freezers, refrigeration space and reconfigured dry goods space, according to a Wininpeg Free Press article.

Near the Victoria Airport, Sobeys is also building a 150,000-square-foot facility and renovating its distribution centre in Calgary.

Sobeys has said the investment in the distribution network out West was being planned before the Target deal, saying the expansion of its DCs will make its operations more efficient in general.

Sobeys is the first Canadian supplier confirmed for Target's entry into the Canadian market.
