Sustainable Produce Urban Delivery (SPUD) has discontinued the sale of all single-use plastic water bottles from its website. The Vancouver-based grocery delivery company will only sell water in glass bottles and aluminum cans.
"We recognize that this ban is only a small piece of the puzzle when it comes to taking greater responsibility for the packaging we distribute, but we believe it is more important to start the process than it is to be perfect," said company CEO Peter van Stolk in a press release.
This announcement follows the recent launch of the company's Pink Bag Takeback program that encourages customers to leave packaging from SPUD.ca's private label brands in their grocery delivery bins. The company will then recycle that packaging through its partnership with Terracycle.
Van Stolk said the company had additional sustainability initiatives in the works that are aimed to "reimagine packaging and empower customers to be part of the solution."
