Target Canada names president

1/19/2011

After all the recent hoopla about American mega-retailer Target entering Canada, the company has just announced its president of Target Canada.

Tony Fisher is stepping into the role and will spearhead the day-to-day operations of Target's expansion into Canada.

He'll also be responsible for building the team and establishing the headquarters, according to a company release.

Fisher has been with Target since 1999 in various leadership roles. Most recently, he worked on the company's efforts to improve shoppers' in-store experience using technological advances and process enhancements as VP of merchandise operations.
Target chief marketing officer and executive committee sponsor of Target Canada, Michael Francis, commented on Fisher's knowledge of Target's merchandising strategy and brand. Francis added, “ positive energy, broad merchandise experience and keen understanding of what differentiates Target in the retail industry make Tony well-suited for this new role and position Target for success in Canada.”
Minneapolis-based Target announced last week that it has acquired leasehold interests in up to 220 sites from Zellers and plans to open 100 to 150 Target stores across Canada beginning in 2013.

A sizable snag has related to the company's move into Canada has since surfaced. Fairweather, a Canadian clothing retailer, has filed a $250-million Federal Court lawsuit against Target. Fairweather claims it owns the rights to the Target name in Canada and is seeking an injunction to prevent the U.S. discounter from using it here.
