H-E-B is No. 1 on Dunnhumby’s 2020 list of top U.S. grocery retailers, knocking Trader Joe’s out of the top spot--a position it held for the last two years.
Amazon, Market Basket and Wegmans Food Markets rounded out the top five of Dunnhumby’s Retail Preference Index--a survey of 7,000 U.S. households to determine which of the top 60 largest grocery retailers have the strongest combination of financial performance and consumer emotional sentiment.
Costco, Aldi, Sam’s Club, Walmart and Publix also made the top 10.
The overall RPI ranking evaluated retailer performance on seven pillars: price, quality, digital, operations, convenience, discounts/rewards and speed.
Dunnhumby’s said a sustained focus and excellence on assortment relevance and private brand contributed to H-E-B’s move into first place. The move, it said, falls in line with its findings that "some regional grocers are getting stronger and are now going toe-to-toe with leading non-traditional retailers."
