U.S. food companies get into GMO debate

Food companies raises millions to fight proposed GMO labelling law

South of the border, the stakes have been raised in the GMO labelling debate with the Grocery Manufacturers Association getting into the fray.

The association, which represents the world's largest branded food, beverage and consumer product companie, contributed $1.75 million recently to help defeat Initiative 522 that would require labelling of foods with GMO ingredients.

To date, the pro-labeling campaign in California has raised more than $9 million, compared to $44 million for the anti-labeling side, with companies such as Monsanto and PepsiCo contributing millions.
