Walmart Canada opened its new Edmonton Kingsway Walmart Supercentre Thursday (Oct. 20) – its first new store in Alberta since 2015.

Sprawling 149,000 sq. ft., the store replaces the Edmonton Westmount Store and will offer Walmart’s grocery pick up and delivery.

The Edmonton Kingsway Supercentre represents a more than $10 million investment in the community, and employs some 220 associates.

In September, Walmart Canada announced $1 billion in infrastructure investments this year, including approximately $330 million to renovate more than 80 stores across Canada.

Customers can expect an assortment of groceries, including Canadian produce, beef, chicken, pork and seafood, a bakery, an international food section and general merchandise.

The store promises an expansive international section including Asian, Indian, Middle Eastern, Italian and Portuguese foods, plus a dedicated international frozen food section.

Sustainable features include a transcritical CO2 refrigeration system with rejected energy being reclaimed for building heating systems, advanced building automation system for lighting and HVAC controls, LED lighting and low flow fixtures.

Walmart currently has 61 stores in Alberta, four distribution centres and more than 16,000 associates.

The retailer has invested more than $80 million in Alberta store upgrades over the past two years, and recently purchased approximately $200 million worth of products from Alberta-based suppliers over a 12-month period.

"We are bringing the best of Walmart Canada to Kingsway Mall," said Derreck Cuschieri, vice president of operations for Western Canada, Walmart Canada, in a statement. "This new location has more space, more products, more services and more options for our customers. Kingsway's close proximity to downtown Edmonton will help more people save money so they can live better. We're proud to be investing for growth in Edmonton while creating jobs for the community."
