Walmart to test 24-hour grocery delivery

The retailer is partnering with HomeValet to test contactless, around the clock delivery

Walmart is thinking inside the box for its latest pilot project.

The big-box discount retailer is partnering with HomeValet, the maker of temperature-controlled smart boxes that are kept outside the customer's home, allowing for contactless delivery.

The boxes have three temperature-controlled zones, so it can properly store frozen, refrigerated and pantry items.

When it comes to delivery, the "smart box communicates with the delivery provider’s device, giving them secure access to the smart box to complete the delivery," according to a blog post on Walmart's website. The retailer says this partnership presents the opportunity to deliver groceries 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Walmart will start testing delivery with HomeValet this spring in its hometown of Bentonville, Ark.
