Walmart's Our Finest previews holiday offering

8/29/2012

On Wednesday, Walmart previewed its premium private label holiday collection in Toronto.

Developed by a 12 member team, including three product developers who travel the world for inspiration, Our Finest collection will have 50 new items for Christmas that are focused on moms and making Christmas time easier, said Sandra Farwell, vice-president of private brands at Walmart.

Items range from $2 to $30 (for turkey) and all products are made in Canada.

Among the new items this year are five different dressings that can be used as dips, dressings or marinades, two additional appetizers that are limited editions (stuffing topped mini turkey pieces and brie and apple phyllo wraps).

There is also a new smoked salmon ring (pre sliced) retailing for $10.

One of the key food trends this season is pies.

Our Finest collection features two lattice top pies (Angus beef and creamy chicken) and two puffed pastry strudels (chicken and mushroom, and chicken, ham and cheese).

Julie Henn, Walmart’s private label development manager, said the pies are hearty and rich, and great for families.

New desserts include a candy cane cheesecake and candy cane sandwich cookie. The candy cane ice cream, a favourite launched last year that sold out in three weeks, features all natural flavours and colours.

The cream puffs also feature natural vanilla extract, while the mini eclairs have real milk chocolate.

The holiday gift items all retail for under $10 and feature Belgian biscuits, three varieties of fudge, and a praline and chocolate nut mix.

The Our Finest collection, launched last year, has been so successful in Canada that Walmart U.S. is looking to introduce some products south of the border, said Farwell.

The holiday collection is a limited edition that will be available November to December.
