Warren Buffett's company invests in grocer Farm Boy

11/15/2012

Boston-based investment firm Berkshire Partners LLC said today it will make a growth equity investment in Canadian retail grocer Farm Boy Inc.

Terms of the investment were not disclosed, said an article in the Boston Herald.

Farm Boy was founded in 1981 by brothers Jean-Louis, Normand and Daniel Bellemare, with the first store in Cornwall, Ont.

Today they have 13 stores now serving the Greater Ottawa and Cornwall areas, with the newest store opened last month in Kingston.

“Berkshire’s long history of joining forces with family-owned businesses to create growth, combined with its experience investing in grocery retail gives us great confidence that we have found the right partner to expand our business,” said Jean-Louis Bellemare, Farm Boy’s vice-president in the article.

Berkshire has invested in the past in retailers Grocery Outlet; Aritzia, a women’s fashion apparel retailer in Canada; Party City; and National Vision.
