At Appalaches Nature, makers of Maple Joe® maple syrup, it’s not enough to produce some of the highest quality maple syrup in the world. We believe in doing it sustainably, something we have dedicated ourselves to pursuing with our maple grower partners, in our day-to-day operations as well as through sustainability initiatives far outside our plant.
It starts with people caring for trees
Most of our producers are located in the heart of the Chaudière-Appalaches, the world’s largest maple syrup producing region, which helps keep shipping emissions low. Even more important, many of these are family operations that have been connected to the land for generations. When the maple sap runs in your veins, you naturally embrace both the principles and practices of sustainability. We work closely with these families so we can all do a little more for the environment, honouring the soil and trees that give us all so much.
Sustainability in every bottle
When we constructed our state-of-the-art bottling plant, we invested an additional 2 million dollars to integrate green technology throughout. Our biomass heating system uses certified-neutral wood pellets that are renewable and sustainably sourced. In 2021 the plant attained carbon neutral status, which it must requalify for every year. It was the first facility in the industry to do so, making every bottle of Maple Joe® a small part of the solution to climate change.
There’s a lot more to do out there
Bringing safe, wholesome products to consumers takes energy. We work hard to keep unavoidable emissions down. For those we can’t eliminate, we work with Terrapass, a social enterprise that helps companies like ours do more to take responsibility for our activities by financially supporting key initiatives in sustainability. These include reforestation, landfill gas capture, industrial emissions reduction and other projects.
B Corp certified and proud
At Appalaches Nature, we’re deeply committed to positive change. We were recently granted B Corp certification, something we worked long and hard to achieve, the only major processor in our segment to do so. B Corp is a holistic assessment, granted to for-profit companies that meet only the highest standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability. Because they involve so many different levels of responsibility, they are very difficult to obtain.
