Whole Foods facing stiffer competition

Whole Foods' competitors now include mainstream supermarkets, and even online retailers

There's a whole lot of competition facing Whole Foods.

That's the sentiment among some analsyts who see the emergence of Sprouts Farmers Market, The Fresh Market and even conventional grocery chain Kroger as a threat to the health food chain's future growth.

Both Sprouts and The Fresh Market, for example, saw their sales increase recently by 24% and 13%, respectively.

Because of Kroger's size (2,414 locations across 31 states), it is able to provide lower prices on organic and natural food, specifically its own in-house line called The Simple Truth. Kroger also said it was planning on expanding its organic and natural offering in the future.
