Self-serve checkouts haven’t caught on at Canadian supermarkets, but across the pond the Brits are trying to perfect them.
The latest one is this super-sized machine (pictured) at a new Tesco Extra in Lincoln, England that automatically scans items placed on the conveyor belt. Customers no longer need to scan products themselves.
Four of the machines from NCR Retail were installed in the 80,000 sq. ft. store opened this month. Each till can scan one item per second, three times faster than a human cashier.
Each machine also has three packing areas, which means three customers can be served at any one time.
