Wrigley "pauses" sales of caffeinated gum in U.S.

Product contains about 40 milligrams of caffeine per pellet, about half a cup of coffee

A mere two weeks after hitting the market, Alert Energy Caffeinated Gum will no longer be available in the U.S.

The Wrigley product, which contains about 40 milligrams of caffeine per pellet and is not available in Canada, came under fire shortly after its launch.

The Food and Drug Administration, for its part, said it was going to look at “caffeinated foods, particularly their effect on children and teenagers.”

On Wednesday, Wrigley said it had “paused” sales, adding, “after discussions with the FDA, we have a greater appreciation for its concern about the proliferation of caffeine in the nation's food supply."
