2025 Star Women in Grocery Award Winner Shawna McClure (Q&A)
Shawna McClure
Director, Supply Chain Transformation
Pattison Food Group
How did you get your start in the grocery business?
While conducting research years ago, I was fortunate to come across an opportunity to join what was then the Overwaitea Food Group, now Pattison Food Group, as a member of its transportation team. At the time, I wasn’t looking for a career change, but the prospect of working for a well-established and respected Canadian company with strong roots was tempting, so I took a closer look. After taking the leap, it only took a few days on the job to know it was a great fit.
What do you like most about your job?
I’ve been fortunate to take on some big challenges and make a difference. I love that, regardless of the project or initiative we’re working on, it involves collaboration, determination and passion. I get to see amazing people achieve great things together, and I get to be a part of it.
Also, there is always more to learn. Supply chain is always evolving, technology continues to advance, and I’m surrounded by people who push me to grow and provide new challenges.
What is a career challenge you've faced and how did you overcome it?
When I started my career, the office I worked in was located at a distance from the main office. The challenge of working in a satellite office, especially during a time before video calls and online collaboration, was a hurdle I needed to overcome if I was going to learn more about the business and be involved in the company. I pushed myself to be outgoing, get involved and put in the extra effort to connect with people when opportunities arose. I’m grateful for the people I connected with early in my career who helped me navigate and make introductions.
Best career advice you've received?
Some of the best career advice I’ve been given is to be open and adapt to change, challenge what you’re afraid of and know when to take chances. Listen to your instincts, be kind to yourself and have people in your network who inspire you.
What is your leadership style?
My leadership style is best characterized as collaborative and tenacious. My goal is to motivate teams to work together and succeed through positivity, perseverance and partnership while focused on solutions and the end goals. I have great respect for the impact that leaders have on individuals, and I strive to lead by example, empower those around me, be transparent with information and always support where I can.
How do you like to spend time outside of work?
Spending time with my family and friends is my top priority outside of work.
Anything else you'd like to add?
I've been fortunate to have excellent mentors, peers, and leaders involved in my career. They’ve played pivotal roles in my personal and professional development. I’m honoured to receive this award and to be included with such an amazing group of leaders.
