2025 Star Women in Grocery Award Winner Tarra Suppa (Q&A)
Tarra Suppa
Senior Manager, Supply Chain Systems
Loblaw
How did you get your start in the grocery business?
I started at Loblaw seven years ago as a new grad, excited to launch my career in the corporate world. After graduating from Wilfrid Laurier University, I knew I wanted to combine my passion for food and technology—and grocery retail felt like the perfect place to do just that. I joined as a product analyst, where I was introduced to SaaS (software as a service) applications. From there, I had the opportunity to move through several roles within Loblaw Technology and Analytics, each allowing me to dive deeper into different technologies and continue evolving alongside innovative products. That experience helped me build a strong, adaptable skillset, which I now apply in leading the rollout of cloud-based solutions across Loblaw’s Distribution Centre Network—bringing greater efficiency and impact to our warehouse operations.
What keeps you passionate about your work?
Two things. First, seeing my team succeed. Watching them grow, overcome challenges and reach their goals is incredibly rewarding. Their energy keeps me motivated and excited to show up every day. Second, the variety—no two days are ever the same. Whether it's tackling a new problem or learning something unexpected, the constant evolution keeps the work fun and engaging.
What is a career challenge you've faced and how did you overcome it?
The biggest challenge I have had to deal with is imposter syndrome—constantly questioning whether I truly belong in the room, especially as a woman in technology in a primarily male-dominated industry. Despite my accomplishments and skills, I found myself second-guessing my ideas, staying quiet or downplaying my contributions. I have been fortunate enough to have mentors and peers–especially other women in technology–who have reminded me that my experiences and perspective are valuable. I also make a point of celebrating small wins and taking a moment to acknowledge the impact of my work. Over time, I built my confidence by leaning into opportunities such as leading projects, speaking up and mentoring others.
Best career advice you've received?
To believe in myself. It sounds simple, but it’s something I’ve had to continue to remind myself—especially in moments of self-doubt or when stepping into something new. Trusting my instincts, skills and voice has helped me grow and take on challenges I might have shied away from. This has allowed me to lead with confidence.
What is your leadership style?
My leadership style is collaborative and approachable. I believe the best work comes from open dialogue, so I foster an environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing ideas and feedback. Transparency is important to me—when the team understands the bigger picture, we can tackle challenges together with clarity and purpose. I see my role as supporting and empowering others so we can all do our best work, together.
What has been your best day on the job?
It must be the day I found out I won this award! It was a reminder of why I enjoy what I do and who I work with—collaborating with great people, solving meaningful problems and celebrating wins together.
How do you like to spend your time outside of work?
My favourite thing to do outside of work is explore the Toronto food scene. Whether it’s grabbing a coffee from a newly opened café or scoring a reservation at the latest buzz-worthy restaurant, I love discovering new cuisines and hidden gems around the city. It’s a great way to unwind and connect with friends and family over good food.
What is a fun fact about you?
I love to travel and have a serious passion for shoes. I probably own more pairs than I’d like to admit!
