Costco opens its 100th warehouse in Canada

Membership-only chain adds to its store count with 149,000-sq.-ft.

Costco opened the doors to a 149,000-sq.-ft. warehouse--and the discount chain's 100th in Canada-- in Nisku, Alta., on Wednesday morning, just a stone's throw from the Edmonton National Airport.

The store includes Costco’s usual array of specialty departments including an on-site bakery, fresh meat, fresh produce and rotisserie chicken sections, a tire centre, pharmacy and an optical centre.

According to a press release, the membership-only chain was expecting to sell 20,000 ciabatta buns in its first week and 16,000 toilet paper rolls in its first day. The new store has 800 shopping carts, 780 parking spots and 20 gas pumps.

“With the opening of our 100th warehouse in Canada, we can bring the benefits of Costco membership to the doorsteps of Nisku and the surrounding area,” said David Skinner, senior vice-president & general manager, Costco Wholesale Western Canada, in a press release. “This warehouse provides a convenient location for our valued members and members businesses in the local community and throughout the area.”

Costco operates 100 warehouses in Canada, with a new store opening in Regina, Sask. in October. Costco has more than 39,000 employees (with an average salary of $24.50 per hour) and more than 12 million Canadian members.
