Dollar General opening supermarkets

King of the American dollar chains takes on Walmart and other grocery stores

Despite its growing appeal, Dollarama in Canada has not made selling food a priority.

By contrast, American dollar store chains do sell a lot of food. In fact, that country’s biggest, Dollar General, even carries its own private-label brands of groceries.

Now, Dollar General is charting new territory. The company, with some 11,000 stores stateside, has begun to open full grocery stores.

Some 100 Dollar General “market” stores have been opened to date. They carry fresh items such as strawberries and bananas along with packaged goods.

Dollar General, of course, fights on price. A recent Kantar study found the retailer’s prices are slightly less than Walmart and significantly better than rival American grocers such as Aldi, Stop & Shop and Target.
