Finalists of the 21st annual Canadian Grand Prix New Product Awards have been announced.

The award program, which is open to manufacturers and distributors of all sizes, celebrates products introduced during the 2013 calendar year.  Products fall into three categories: food, non-food and private-label.

“Each finalists represents the collective efforts of product development, design and brand management teams to inspire and delight  consumers,” said Diane J. Brisebois, President and CEO of RCC in a press release.

To become a finalist, a product must score at least 70% in judging. This year, 89 products were selected by a jury comprised of people working the grocery industry, packaging experts, food editors, ad executives and consumers.

Unique flavor combinations, healthier offerings, and simplicity were key characteristics of some of the food finalists.

“We saw a lot of natural, no preservatives – simple food that tastes great” said Marcus Von Albrecht, jury chair and president of Mava Foods. He added convenience and usefulness were noted in non-food items as well.

Many companies had several products among the finalists, with Procter & Gamble leading the way with 10 finalists in the non-food category.

Winners in 26 individual categories will be announced June 4th at the Grand Prix Gala at the Toronto Congress Centre, as part of the STORE 2014 retail conference.
