Quebec-based FoodHero has helped divert seven million pounds of food from waste last year, according to its new impact report. The figure is equivalent to 12 million plates of pasta or 1,630 flights between Montreal and Vancouver.

FoodHero, which describes itself as a social-impact tech company, connects shoppers with surplus groceries at discounts of between 25% to 60%. The report highlights "the growing momentum of a collective movement."

In 2019, the company partnered with five Metro stores in Montreal and more than 200 IGA locations across the province to pursue its mission of reducing food waste while helping households save on their grocery bills. Thanks to an expanded partnership with Empire Company Limited, FoodHero is now available in 1,000 locations across the country.

In its impact report, FoodHero called out the size of Canada's food waste problem, noting that nearly 50% of food produced in Canada is never consumed and that 41% of food waste is avoidable, representing $58 billion in lost value each year. The report notes that each day, perfectly good food goes unsold in grocery stores, not because it isn't safe or nutritious, but often because of overstock, packaging changes or approaching best before dates.

"Food waste is one of the most striking paradoxes in our food system," said Renaud LeBlanc, FoodHero's president in a release. "Even as food prices rise and food insecurity increases, large quantities of perfectly edible food are still being discarded. FoodHero shows that it's possible to turn these surpluses into real value for families, retailers and the environment."
