Lack of CFIA meat inspectors is putting people at risk, says union

Agriculture Union president says inspectors are worried sick about declining safety standards

The union representing Canada's meat inspectors says there is a critical shortage of inspectors that is putting the safety of consumers at risk.

The Agriculture Union says 12 of 18 meat hygiene inspection positions need to be filled in northern Alberta.

President Bob Kingston says the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has instructed staff in the region to cut general sanitation inspection activities by 50 per cent.

He says some inspectors are worried sick about declining safety standards and others have quit.

Kingston says a lack of funding is creating similar problems and concerns at meat facilities across the country.

CFIA officials could not immediately be reached for comment.
